Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) is one of the main research institutes of marine sciences in Portugal. Located in Faro, Algarve, CCMAR uses a multi-disciplinary approach involving ecology, oceanography, environmental sciences, biotechnology, fisheries and aquaculture. CCMAR’s mission is to understand, protect and explore marine resources through innovation and advanced training. CCMAR has generated 4 spin-offs and has several connections with the industry in order to foster R&D and innovation in terms of science, technology and the blue economy.

MarBiotech Research Group
MarBiotech is a research group led by João Varela and Luísa Barreira. The focus of the group is the study of microalgae to use them as novel sources of (functional) food and feed, biostimulants, drug leads, while fixating CO2 into biomass and treating effluents from the agroindustry and other sources. The final goal is to use microalgae as drivers for a more sustainable and circular bioeconomy.
