Ángela Martínez Valverde

Bachelor in Pharmacy and PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). Her research career has focused on molecular metabolism. As PhD student, shestudied insulin/IGF1 actions in brown adipocytes. As a postdoctoral fellow at Cancer Research UK (London), she cloned protein kinase D1, a Ser/Thr kinase with a fundamental role in cancer and glucose homeostasis. Back in Spain as an Assistant Professor at the UCM, she applied her expertise in signal transduction to dissect the insulin/IGF1 cascades involved in brown adipocyte proliferation/differentiation. Since 2002, as a Senior Scientist at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), she has been studying the mechanisms of insulin action in the liver and the molecular basis of metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Her lab is focused on the study of the impact of insulin resistance, ER stress, autophagy, oxidative stress and inflammation in MASLD, as well as the interactome between liver cells in this context. In terms of therapeutics, they have elucidated the efficacy of a GLP-1/glucagon receptor co-agonist in improving liver regeneration in steatohepatitis. Her laboratory is also investigating the molecular basis of metabolic changes induced by chronic drug treatment, in particular the effects of antipsychotic drugs on whole-body metabolism.
