María Monsalve

María Monsalve graduated in Biological Sciences at the “Universidad Autónoma de Madrid” (UAM), and was awarded a PhD degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UAM. Currently, she holds a tenure position, Investigador Científico (CSIC), at the “Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas Sols-Morreale” (IIBM, CSIC-UAM) in Madrid (Spain) where she leads  the Mitochondria in Health and Disease Group.

The main research interest of the group is to understand the role played by the regulation of mitochondrial activity, and in particular the control mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production in human metabolism-related diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer and type 2 diabetes. The sudies span from the elucidation of basic mechanisms to the development of applications with comercial and/or social value. She has been awarded 2 regional, 8 national and 2 european competitive grants as Principal Investigator and she has supervised 10 PhD Thesis an is currently supervising 4 PhD students. 

María Monsalve is currently Treasurer of the  Sociedad Española de Bioqúimica y Biología Molecular” (SEBBM), Vice-president of the “Grupo Español de Investigación en Radicales Libres” (GEIRLI), Member of the European Society for Free Radical Research (SFRR-europe), of the The European Society for Mitochondrial Research and Medicine (E-mit), of the Spanish Society of Diabetes (SED) and of the COST action BenBedPharm.
